Discocalyx dissecta Kaneh. & Hatus. is described and illustrated. Details of its discovery, habitat and cultivation are provided.Discocalyx dissecta Kaneh. 8c Hatus. is a noticeably distinct species and peculiar for its genus. It was first found and collected in the Arfak Mountain Region of New Guinea during a collecting expedition of the Japanese botanists Kanehira and Hatusima in 1940, (Kanehira & Hatusima, 1942), and living material, from which the colour plate here has been illustrated and painted, has since been collected and cultivated at the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. It is a small semi-herbaceous shrub growing close to the ground, with feather-like leaves in terminal rosettes crowded towards the apex of slender woody stems. The leaves, which are bright green to pinkish-red in colour, unfurl much like those of a fern-frond. (Figs 1 & 4).
