Global Gas Demand Surged in 2018,Led by US and China,IEA Says

Global gas demand rose 4.6% last year,or 170 billion cubic meters(5.9 trillion cubic feet),driven by efforts in the US and China to replace coal-fired electricity with cleaner sources,the International Energy Agency said in a new report.Gas' growth rate was the fastest since 2010,indicating that the burst of LNG supplies hitting the market from the US and elsewhere is having little difficulty finding a home.“Last year can be considered another golden year for gas,which accounted for almost half the growth in global energy demand,” said Fatih Birol,the IEA's executive director.The US' 10.5%(2.8 Tcf),gain from 2017 marked the highest annual demand increase since the 1950s,the agency said.“This higher consumption,the equivalent of the United Kingdom's annual consumption,absorbed the majority of the growth in domestic gas production,which also hit record levels in 2018.”
