Hakea rhombales Proteaceae

The historical and systematic context of the original description of Hakea rhombales F. Muell. (Proteaceae), its taxonomy and distribution are discussed, together with some speculation on its biology. An illustration and a full description of the species are provided. Hakea is a genus of the Proteaceae consisting of some 150 species, spread over most of Australia and confined to the island continent.The genus was named in 1797 by two German botanists, HeinrichSchrader andjohann Wendland (1797), based on material of three Hakea species collected at Botany Bay by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, botanists on Captain Cook's 1770 voyage to Tahiti and New Holland. Seed of these specimens was returned to England and from there dispersed throughout Europe where Australian plants were enjoying popularity as novelties (Nelson, 1990). The name honours Baron von Hake, a Hanoverian patron of botany.
