Spatial processing: Place cells as route planners.

摘要

How does the brain plan a route to a particular known location? A new study in rats shows that just before an animal sets off to a known goal location from a novel start location, its hippocampal place cells generate brief sequences of neuronal activity that encode a spatial trajectory towards the goal location and thereby seemingly guide navigational behaviour.
