Traumatic brain injury: Brain trauma in military veterans.

All too often we hear news reports of military personnel and civilians suffering injury due to exploding devices. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a likely outcome of exposure to blasts; it is characterized by neurological and psychiatric symptoms, including memory loss, that resemble symptoms reported by athletes suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) due to repeated concussion. A new study shows that a similar neuropathology characterizes both conditions and that head acceleration plays a crucial part in at least some of the pathophysi-ological changes in TBI.
