Assessing technological innovation: A necessary uphill struggle

In August of 1945, at age 15, I heard the radio announcement of the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima. It had a profound if inchoate effect on me, much more than I could then understand. The world and our lives together had been irreversibly changed by that new technology. But it was not until my old age that I became part of another seemingly irreversible technological development.
