A Review of ASME Section I Electric Boilers Inspection, Testing, Stamping, and Documentation Requirements

Inspectors encounter many types of boilers in their quest to keep the public safe. One type of boiler used for specific applications is the electric boiler. They are often found where steam is required, but no source of oil or gas is available. Inspectors are also likely to find them in kitchens, spas, and any place where lower quantities of steam are required, so as not to warrant an oil- or gas-fired boiler. Since these versatile electric boilers are being manufactured and are in use, inspectors need to understand their ASME Code stamping and documentation requirements. Unfortunately, there may be some electric boilers operating that have incomplete or missing documentation. For especially this reason, inspectors should know the sometimes confusing rules associated with electric boilers. Those rules indicate which designator should accompany the ASME Certification Mark on an electric boiler and how the data report or reports should be completed.
