Raising train speed is a worldwide trend, and Japan Railways (JR) companies have been makingvigorous efforts at the increase of railway speeds, in particular the speeds of Shinkansen trains, sincethe privatization and division of the Japanese National Railways about 10 years ago. In order to realize Shinkansen trains with higher speeds. much research and development in avariety of related technological fields has been necessary. In particular, tribology has been expectedto play an important role because technological requirements involving tribology become muchseverer with increased speeds. Herein are surveyed various tribological subjects related to the increase of Shinkansen trainspeeds.
