Mummy is caused by a bacterium in the Pseudomonas genus. Bacterium requires a break in mycelial cells to gain access. Mummy will develop by first break if mycelium on spawn is infected at filling or digging. Bacterium does not kill the host mycelium, rather it uses it as the transport network. It does kill the sporophore. Overwet compost is a frequent cause because the mummy bacterium is flagellated (see box below) and moves well in wet environments.
