Using Parasitoid Wasps to Control Phase I Nuisance Flies

Phase I composting facilities can attract house flies (Musca domestica) and stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans), especially composters who use equine and poultry manures. The stored straw (horse bedding) and poultry litter are major attractants of these flies, which can be present in high numbers and become a nuisance pest throughout farm facilities, including offices, and to nearby residential areas. The control of a nuisance fly problem could be handled with pesticides but not without substantial cost and possible toxicity to nontargeted species. Research also shows that insect species eventually build up resistance to insecticides. Using available biological pest management to control nuisance insects avoids these issues.
