Cystic Lesions

Cystic lesions of the breast are an extremely common finding, especially in premenopausal women, and they are frequently symptomatic due to the presence of swelling and pain associated to the proliferative phase of the menstrual cycle, abnormal nipple discharge, or the occurrence of palpable lumps. The common denominator of this group of lesions is the presence of fluid, amorphous material, and foamy histio-cytes in the cytological smear without significant epithelial proliferation. Even if cystic lesions are almost always classified as benign, a cystic component might render an underlying cancer less evident.
