During WWII the British ministry of supply commissioned the Thornycroft marine company to design and produce a '4 ton Amphibian' in the lead up to D-day with a view to supplementing the use of the US built DUKW which was expected to be in short supply. The vehicle produced by Thornycroft became known as the Terrapin Mk I.
