We Visit the Warrington & District MES

I spent a very pleasant morning with the members of the Warrington & District MES at their Daresbury track site in September - arriving in a rain shower I soon had a mug of tea in my hand and felt very welcome. This club have had quite an interesting history having been formed in the early 1940's in the Penketh area with a small up and down track. Around 1948 they moved to a new site in Earlestown and here they built a raised 3 1/2 and 5 inch gauge track in the grounds of the British Legion club. Evening meetings were held around the town in different venues. That was fine until round 1967 when the British Legion required a larger car park and asked the club to look for another site. An advertisement was placed in the local press and a piece of land was offered by the Spastics Society Home at Daresbury. A suitable agreement was made so the track at Earlstown was dismantled and work started on rebuilding a new track in September 1967. It was completed in 1968 and the club enjoyed their new site building, a clubhouse which could host their evening meetings and provide good running conditions for members. With the cooperation of the adjacent landowner in the early 1970's an extension was built through what was known as Betty's Wood giving the club a track length of 1700ft.
