INDONESIA'S COFFEE EXPORTS STAY FLAT IN 2017/18

Indonesian coffee production was only fractionally higher at 10.9 mln 60-kg bags in 2017/18 compared with 10.8 mln a year earlier. While output in 2016/17 had been curtailed by an El Nino-induced drought in 2015 that interrupted flowering and ripeningof the coffee cherries, production in 2017/18 was held below potential by too much rain during October and November 2016 which affected flowering in highland ro-busta areas. Strong winds during a rather wet dry season also contributed to the disruptionin flowering in northern Sumatra. Arabica crops dominate in Northern Sumatra and some mountainous areas in Java, while Robusta is grown mostly in Southern Sumatra.
