The International Coffee Organisation (ICO) has published a study1 in which it examines the prospects for the African coffee sector, which has largely stagnated in recent years. Specifically, the aim of this study is to review the development of production and consumption patterns since the liberalisation of the global coffee market. Specific emphasis is placed on an assessment of the level of value added in the African coffee sector compared to other producing regions. Finally, the main constraintsto increasing value addition are identified and investment requirements highlighted.
