World coffee futures ended with sizeable gains as short-covering lifted values from recent lows. The benchmark arabica contract for July delivery ended up 6.650 at 124.350/lb and even hit a 2-1/2-month high at 125.950 on Wednesday. The contract fell as low as 115.300 on April 17, the weakest for the second position since March 2016. However, the gains were curtailed by expectations that Brazilian producers may become more active in hedging the bumper 2018/19 crop, especially given the recent weakening in the currency, which improves their local currency returns. September added 6.900 to 126.700/lb.
