How can professional midwifery advocates use restorative clinical supervision to positively influence staff cultures in midwifery?

In April 2017 the midwifery profession was subjected to a pivotal episode in its history when a legislative change was implemented leading to a cessation of statutory supervision, which had been a unique element of midwifery practice since 1902. The underpinning reasoning for this change was that, fundamentally, midwifery supervision was failing to identify poor midwifery practice (Kirkup 2015). Therefore the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (2015) now takes sole responsibility for ensuring a more robust governance system to monitor standards of practice and ultimately ensure the safety and protection of the people in their care.
