The global antibiotic research and development partnership (GARDP): researching and developing new antibiotics to meet global public health needs

Over the last decade there have been numerous political calls to address the lack of new antibiotics. Such calls come in the face of increasing numbers of drug-resistant bacterial infections for which few or no effective treatments are available, and a decrease in the number of pharmaceutical companies active in this field. Declarations such as that adopted by Member States at the UN General Assembly in 2016 on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) called for innovative research and development; affordable and accessible antimicrobial medicines and vaccines; improved surveillance and monitoring; and increased international cooperation to control and prevent AMR.
