Sir,NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQ01) is a multifunctional cytoprotective protein . Of particular interest is its ability to stabilize p53 protein by inhibiting its proteasomal degradation, as has been shown in cultured cells , A retrospective study of endoscopic transurethral resection of bladder cancers at presentation over a 12-year period (1989-2001) was conducted and a tissue mieroarray from samples of 194 patients constructed, as described previously by Kononen etal. , and sections were processed for routine immunohistochemistry using p53 and NQ01 monoclonal antibodies. For statistical analysis, the following baseline variables were considered for their prognostic value: age at presentation, gender, tumour stage and grade, p53 and NQ01 status. Multiple Cox proportional hazards models for multiple-failure data were used and the results were expressed in terms of the hazard ratio, derived from the estimated regression coefficients, with their 95% CI. Our study showed that p53 protein level isassociated with tumour grade and recurrence, similar to previous reports .
