Trends in titanium structures for aircraft of the future "The keynote speaker was Frank Doerner of Boeing, who discussed "Titanium for Aircraft: Uses, Technologies, and Future Trends." He pointed out that advanced structures made of composites are also driving more applications for titanium, as shown in j Fig. 1. In 2005, Boeing Commercial Airplanes used about 15M pounds of titanium, and that amount is expected to more than double when the 787 Dream-liner reaches full-rate production. To increase the usage of titanium, performance must be improved and costs reduced. Higher strength can be achieved by applying high-strength and high-toughness heat treatments for the Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr alloy. Ti-B alloys have the potential for a 20% stiffness increase, and some titanium composites can provide an 80% stiffness increase.
