The campus of Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) was founded by the merger of steel and aluminum. In 1967, Andrew Carnegie's (U.S. Steel's founder) Carnegie Institute of Technology merged with Paul Mellon's (Alcoa founder) Mellon Institute of Industrial Research to create a new learning institution.
