A research program designed to demonstrate automated thermoplastic tow placement is currently underway at the University of Delaware's Center for Composite Materials (CCM). The program includes the evaluation of quality sensor techniques for such applications as model development and process control. Among the dozen or so state-of-the-art techniques being evaluated, one of the most promising is infrared thermography.
