摘要

Today, steel structural members are protected from fire by the addition of insulating coatings or encasement. The potential benefits of reducing or even eliminating fire protection coatings with fire-resistant steels that provide effective high-temperature strength would drive down construction costs. This article describes work in which some important classes of microalloyed steels were evaluated for fire-resistance properties. The two steps to the experimental design were to develop a methodology for testing uncoated structural materials for fire-resistance, and to examine elevated temperature properties of selected steels.
