Transference love is still considered a delicate and difficult subject, if not even taboo; however, it is at the same time the motor of every analytical process. In "conventional horror", Josef Breuer fled from it shortly before psychoanalysis was discovered. Transference love causes confusion, seems to undermine the analysis and yet drives it again and again. To avoid it therapeutically would be just as problematic as to give in to it. So how should one deal with the feelings of love, the desire for closeness and perhaps also sexuality? These challenges are faced by patients and therapists alike.
