An energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometer made by Oxford Instruments Analytical, U.K., reportedly reduces nuclear power plant coolant analysis costs from 25 dollars to 3.10 dollars per sample, while also improving accuracy. It is important to monitor levels of metals in the coolant stream because increased levels can lead to formation of iron oxide residue on the cladding of the fuel rod, causing both corrosion and power loss.
