A family of iron-base hardfacing alloys designated Norem has been developed to address issues unique to the nuclear power industry. The Initial focus was on developing a hardfacing alloy for nuclear plant valves. However, later laboratory studies and field evaluations show Norem can also protect components at hydroelectric and fossil power generating stations from degradation induced by various wear and corrosion mechanisms. This article summarizes the key steps in the development of the alloy, describes current field applications, and points out other areas where it holds potential.
