Traditionally, sheets of graphene were produced using the process of mechanical exfoliation of graphite. This process is typically used to obtain graphene of best quality. Despite its being an extremely expensive, complicated, and time-consuming process, researchers have been constrained to using it as there was no alternative solutions. Although there were several attempts to develop improved methods for manufacturing of graphene, such as synthesis of graphene by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on metallic substrates, none proved to be cost-effective. Currently, the cost of graphene sheets is too high for industrial applications, and hence there is a need to reduce the cost by improving the production methods.
