摘要

At present, plastics have become synonymous with automotive applications. Along with plastics, the use of composites, carbon fiber-reinforced plastics are still in nascent stages. Composites are a relatively new development, which has key potential for adoption in the automobile industry due to their low weight and high strength. Plastics and composites are considered as one of the enabling materials in addressing the need of the automotive industry. The composite industry by itself is a wide and complex one with research institutions and companies working together with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to produce a ready-to-market product. Some important considerations while using a composite for automobiles are the strength properties, retention of strength with end use exposure, creep resistance, and ease of manufacture and application. The lay up process plays an important part of the composite-part manufacturing.
