Donald Sell from General Motors' Body Structures Group, spoke on the potential use of composites for passenger cars. He has spent over 20 years in composites deign. He said, "We demand defect-free components, more stiffness is a must-even with cuts in weight, we need surface finish quality and lower costs, we need load-bearing primary structures in composites, and we see a major opportunity for 'exposed carbon fiber' for aesthetics. We seek major, qualified suppliers that can demonstrate 'existing' quality, cost, and volume capabilities. Suppliers to the auto industry must be able to sustain the 're-re-quotes' process and multiple design reviews. They also must be able to withstand the relentless demand for improved quality plus lower costs plus high volumes."
