Methods for prevention of complications during eyelid and peri-orbital surgery

Introduction: Complications during eyelid and periorbital surgery can result in a poor post-operative outcome. Prevention and early recognition of complications is key to a good outcome. Areas covered: The published literature with the terms "complications of oculoplastic/ptosis/ blephar-oplasty surgery, anticoagulation, patient satisfaction, psychosocial cosmetic surgery, surgical checklist and local/ophthalmic/general anesthesia" were searched using PubMed. Preoperative patient evaluation, discussion of patient's desired outcomes, practical considerations of operating scheduling and operating theatre management are highlighted. Tips on management of the anti-coagulated patient, patient positioning and anaesthesia, optimal surgical techniques and preventable complications of eyelid surgery will be discussed. Expert commentary: Knowledge of possible surgical complications that may occur enables the surgeon to prepare for and confidently prevent them.
