Having visited the site's administration building* for meetings on previous occasions,Fuel Oil News editor Jane Raphael was very pleased to be invited to also tour the refinery site in early March.Meeting with commercial business manager,Bryan Hayes,and Ian Cotton,head of communications and community prior to the refinery tour,FON caught up with recent developments including the excellent news that average margins have increased from a low of one dollar to between 45 and 5 dollars.“Whilst the diesel market continued to grow as issues surfaced in 2017,our aim has always been survival for the longer term;to that end we needed to maximise our refinery with a wider range of high margin products,producing a higher yield,” explained Ian.With a wider crude slate and cost savings essential for greater efficiency and economies of scale,Stanlow now takes 40 more crudes than it did under Shell.Providing 16% of the country's road transport fuel demand,Stanlow receives its crude via a pipeline from Tranmere,a deep-water port opposite the Liverpool Exhibition Centre,with 80% of production going into the UK market.
