Outcomes of scrotal exploration for acute scrotal pain suspicious of testicular torsion: a consecutive case series of 173 patients.

We read with great interest the article by Molokwu et al. [1] on the outcomes of scrotal exploration for acute scrotai pain suspicious of testicular torsion. The authors reported their findings from an 11-year prospective database containing 172 procedures. The main results were that 51% of patients had testicuiar torsion, patients with torsion of testicular appendages were significantly younger than other patients with scrotal pain and the frequency of testicular torsion was higher in the colder half of the year, in addition the authors found no pathology in 10% of those explored and an orchidectomy rate of 9%. Most of the latter group presented after 24 h of symptoms. The information regarding intraoperative findings may be extremely useful when counselling parents and patients preoperatively.
