Japanese shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Tokyo-based e5 Lab Co Ltd, to conduct a joint study for a hybrid powered 'pure car carrier' (PCC) vessel equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell system and large-capacity batteries. The companies aim to develop a hydrogen hybrid PCC, which would emit no CO_2, sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), or particulate matter (PM) while under way in coastal waters or in port. When navigating in the open sea, the hydrogen hybrid PCC's motor would be powered by a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled generator and the large-capacity batteries, resulting in significantly lower emissions than current vessels equipped with diesel engines that run on heavy oil.
