Napa County's Almost Lost Heirloom Apple Variety

Roughly six or seven years ago I went on a day hike just outside Calistoga, California, with a couple of close friends. Our plan for the outing was to hike the Oat Hill Mine Trail, which is the remains of what was once a hand-built road used to transport volcanic ash stone from mountain quarries for construction. It also was used to bring down mined cinnabar ore, which yielded quicksilver or mercury. Napa County's quicksilver mines at one time were the second-largest producers of this resource in the entire United States.
