North American Coal Corp. Tells FERC Compensation Should be Paid for Coal Plant Stand-by

Coal-fired generation plants should be compensated for assets that are required to stay online to handle the day-to-day volatility of renewables, which results in a financial loss, the North American Coal Corp. (NA Coal) told the Commission in comments filed May 9, about grid resiliency (AD18-7). NA Coal explained that coal-fired plants are essential for the security of the power grid, but unlike other types of power plants, a coal plant can’t cycle on and off depending on need, and because renewables can be unreliable, coal power plants must remain in stand-by mode, which can be costly.
