Misoprostol in the management of postpartum haemorrhage in low-resource settings.

We read, with interest, the article by Mobeen et al. on the administration of oral misoprostol by traditional birth attendants (TBAs) to prevent postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) in Pakistan. It was a simple but interesting study, which concluded that the oral administration of 600 mug of misoprostol at home deliveries reduces the rate of PPH by 24%, which is statistically significant. The investigators need to be credited for the fact that they performed a well-organised randomised controlled trial (RCT) in a difficult remote setting with unskilled and mostly illiterate TBAs.
