Lower Extremity Amputation and Mortality Rates in the Reconstructed Diabetic Charcot Foot and Ankle with External Fixation Data Analysis of 116 Patients

Purpose of Study: To determine differences in amputation and mortality rates in two diabetic Charcot neuroarthropathy groups undergoing surgery with circular external fixation. Approach: Electronic patient records of a total of 116 patients with diabetic Charcot neuroarthropathy (CN) with a documented follow-up record of at least 6 months, surgically reconstructed with circular external fixation were selected for the study. They belonged to one of two groups: patients with foot and/ or ankle ulceration (group 1) who further were classified as those with and without osteomyelitis (groups 1A and 1B, respectively). Diabetic patients with CN but without ulceration or osteomyelitis formed the control group.
