Energy giants face 35% output cut to hit Paris climate goals

By 2040, the largest listed oil and gas majors must decrease production by over one third of today's production in order to maintain emissions within goals set in the landmark Paris climate deal. According to Climate Tracker, the present emission rates from the energy giants would see the global carbon budgets exceeded within decades because of an unstoppable increase in oil and gas production output. Under the 2015 Paris deal, nations should control temperature increases to less than 2 °C and to a safer limit of 1.5 °C if at all possible.
