In the realm of exploratory catalysis, advances in physicochemical characterization, mechanistic modeling and control at the atomic level are often the keys to opening up promising new areas of research. In fact, characterization, modeling, and control at the atomic level are usually the foundations upon which breakthroughs in catalysis are developed. Three recently published articles in Nature Catalysis and ACS Catalysis are worth reading as they would seem to reflect significant advances in each of these three areas.
