The Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA), the world's premier trade association for distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS), has released an educational primer to inform the power industry on how to deploy sensing technologies: Cable Installation Considerations for Power Utilities. The document provides guidance on the selection and installation of cables for fiber optic sensing in the power utilities domain. The most prevalent sensing technology for power utility applications is Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), which monitors temperatures along power cable assets, informing on the past and present electric current loads. Utility network Operators also use Acoustic systems (DAS) for cable fault detection and location. This new document is the product of FOSA's Technology Committee.
