LET us count the ways the federal government has failed to keep us safe from a foodborne illness.First is the latest outbreak of Escherichia coli 0157:H7 linked to precut romaine lettuce. As of April 27, 98 people were reported to have become ill from this bug across 22 states, with 46 hospitalized.That is a 60% hospitalization rate — almost twice the usual rate — so this is an especially virulent strain of the bacterium. Maybe it could be called a superbug?
