Global steelmakers had a busy summer,certainly those in Asia, where crude steeloutput in China in August breached therecord high set only a month earlier to reach74.59 million mt, up 0.8% on month and8.7% on year.Other large Asian producers India, Japanand South Korea were busy through themonth – with Japan being the only hiccup –but it’s the production trends in China whichremain pivotal to global growth. Thanksagain to Chinese output growth, WorldSteel Association’s crude steel productionstatistics for August showed a 6.3% riseto 143.6 million mt compared with August2016. Capacity utilization was 72.2%, up 3.3percentage points on year, the associationsaid.
