The Dar ss peninsula in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, is a well-known vacation destiny due to its natural beauty and the location on the coast. The Dar ss is part of the National Park "Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft" but is also used intensively for agriculture and other natural resources. The aim of this study was the basic characterization of hydrogeology on the Dar ss peninsula. The Dar ss peninsula is morphologically divided into the Altdar ss (central heights), Vordar ss (southern plain), and Neudar ss (northern flat area) areas. This trisection also applies to groundwater recharge and hydraulic conductivities for the upper aquifers. The values are in the range of 4 center dot 10(-6) to 1 center dot 10(-5)m/s in the Altdar ss area but lower on Neudar ss and Vordar ss. The main recharge area is in Altdar ss whereas the marshy areas with shallow groundwater levels in Neudar ss lead to high evapotranspiration and a net discharge of groundwater. Groundwater levels sometime fall below the water level of the Baltic Sea. Especially near the coast, this leads to saltwater intrusion with increased salt concentrations in the aquifer and a decrease in availability of fresh water for drinking water production and agriculture.
