Antioxidant activity and phenolic content of some Emirates medicinal plants.

Nine hydroalcoholic extracts of traditional medicinal plants from the Arabian Gulf region were analysed for the presence of natural antioxidant compounds for potential use in various applications, such as food flavouring and preservation. Total antioxidative activity of plant extracts was determined by the FRAP method and the DPPH radical scavenging assay, leading to total antioxidant activities in the range 11.9-70.3 mumol ascorbic acid equivalents/g dry plant and radical scavenging activities (EC50 values) in the range 0.56-253.5 mug/ml. Total phenols contents were 2.96-15.1 mg gallic acid equivalents/g dry plant. Plants with the highest total antioxidant capacities and phenols contents were Fagonia ovalifolia and Heliotropum bacciferum. A positive correlation was observed between the phenols contents and FRAP values of the tested plant extracts (R2 = 0.865).
