Gold is coming back into its own, buoyed by a new role it is playing in the effort to halt climate change. While legions of small operators struggle to make a living, or mine at all, under the weight of environmental regulations, a growing number are finding success via a rather unusual and unintentional route; giving their gold the tag of responsibly sourced. For small operators, switching to solar or other clean energy sources may not be a viable option. But having a net-zero impact can mean outweighing the bad — air and water pollution, stripping the landscape and stream impacts — with the good—restoring the landscape, improving stream flows and cleaning up after those who came before.
