German utility RWE has shelved plans for development of its Tilbury Energy Centre in the United Kingdom, which included plans for a 2.5 GW plant. The UK needs to invest in new capacity to replace ageing coal and nuclear plants that are due to close in the 2020s, but new large facilities have struggled in the face of high costs and low electricity prices. High wholesale gas and carbon permit prices have led to weakening economics for gas fired power stations.
