Shipments of CO2 for CO2 laser oscillators in 2017 fell 6% from the previous year to 109,000 cylinders. As CO2 used in laser processing equipment, there are two main types of applications. Either it is CO2 used for oscillators, where it is mixed with helium and nitrogen and subjected to an electric discharge to create a high-output laser beam, or it is C02 used as an assist gas to blow away metal melted by the heat of the laser beam during processing. The output of a C02 laser processing machine varies as the gas in the oscillator deteriorates, requiring a constant supply of fresh gas. However, fiber laser processing machines have expanded in the market over the last few years, and although assist gas is still required in processing, gas is not required for the laser oscillator, which has resulted in a downward trend in demand for this gas.
