TAYLOR, MARTINEAU AND THE QUEST FOR PUBLIC GAS LIGHTING IN NORWICH

OUTSIDE OF LONDON, the first provincial town to receive a public supply of gas was Preston. Preston had established links with gas lighting through the nearby school, Stonyhurst College, which was the first non-factory establishment to be lit by gas. With a plentiful supply of mill owners requiring gas lighting for their mills, Preston was particularly well-suited to the task of developing a public gas company. The town was lit with coal gas in 1816. However, the story of gas lighting in Norwich was going to take a slightly different path, soon after Preston.
