Vanishing rectal subepithelial mass

A 50-year-old woman underwent a screening colonos-copy. Five years previously, at an outside institution, she had undergone a colonoscopy that had revealed no abnormalities. Digital rectal examination before colonoscopy revealed an anterior mass. Colonoscopy showed a smooth subepithe-lial mass on the anterior rectal wall (A, atrouj). The patient was experiencing her menstrual period and was wearing a tampon, which she consented to remove. Repeated rectal examination and flexible sigmoidoscopy revealed no mass on digital palpation or on sigmoidoscopic examination (B), confirming that the perceived mass was indentation of the rectum from her tampon.
