Assessment of comfort during colonoscopy: a nurse- or patient-rated scale?

To the Editor: We read with interest the study by Rostom et al, which validates a nurse-rated scale assessing a patient's comfort during colonoscopy. Pain during colonoscopy is important because pain is a frequent cause of incomplete colonoscopy,2 and, not surprisingly, patients having comfortable colonoscopies report higher satisfaction ratings.3 A validated scale would therefore be useful, not only during colonoscopy to prompt changes during the procedure or consideration of discontinuation of the procedure, but also as a tool to quality assure the practice of colonoscopists.
